Lessons and Legacy

Intro:
Of all the people out there
This one is for my fans
Who still can show their age
By using their hands

Verse 1:
It was maybe August
The year 1999
I was in the barn
With my grandpa all the time
That morning it was foggy
There were cows to be chased in
Being so adventurous
I decided I was going
My grandpa said be careful
But he said that all the time
I just ran ahead
It was a thrill to be outside
In the pasture was a bull
I didn’t even see him come
Soon I was the target
And I was on the run
I couldn’t catch my breath
There was no time to react
I started for the house
But the bull was hauling fast
By just about four seconds
I made it under the fence
My grandpa he had warned me
And I haven’t ran out since

Bridge:
My grandpa concerned
Lessons he’s learned
And a legacy he’s earned

Chorus:
He was passing on his lessons and legacy
When you’re young isn’t funny
How to old are boring with their stories
That pass on their lessons and legacy

Verse 2:
It was mid summer
Of the year 2005
We were in the river
Trying to pass the time
An idea struck
While watching the twigs float
We decided to construct
Forty Pepsi bottle boats
Becca and Abby
Were still quite too young
I was the big brother
Showing them the fun
Dumping buckets of water
A boat regatta race
Competition and failure
Who would get first place
At the same stage in growth
Skills built collectively
We would form evermore
The childhood memories
Sharing time together
The best of summer days
Learning with each other
A paragon of ways

Bridge:
A purity confirmed
Lessons we’ll learn
And a legacy we’ll earn

Chorus:
We were making our lessons and legacy
It’s only the experiences you have as a child
That you carry with you throughout your entire life
Creating our lessons and legacy

Verse 3:
It was the tenth of June
The year 2009
I was growing older
But then born a second time
The mirror image of me
Gage had so much grow
My first baby cousin
I had so much show
There were legends to teach
Pass example decisions
Like the epitome of a god
He’d be like my religion
Now I am a godfather
I am responsible
Standing at the altar
As I light his candle
Pride is in the surreal
My reason in everything
I look up for guidance
But he just looks up at me
I see the same sense of wonder
As he’s sipping on the bottle
Except now he’s the boy
And I am the role model

Bridge:
Now it was my turn
Lessons I’ve learned
And a legacy I’ve earned

Chorus:
I will pass on my lessons and legacy
Never would though childhood to be so ephemeral
Even harder to believe after that maturity is eternal
I will have to pass on my lessons and legacy

Ending:
You can’t take anything with you when you die
Might as well give it to the ones worth dying for
Leaving, Legends, Legacy, Lessons
